Asking for help does not need to be difficult. My teaching philosophy is to support students where they are and make sure they receive everything they need in and out of tutoring sessions. Sessions with me build rapport and use curated resources I have on hand to work through strategies for writing.
I welcome high school students, college students, and adult learners to gain a better understanding of their coursework.
We can cover class essays, college applications, scholarship essays, and even test prep strategies and organization tools. See below for more details.
The key is that I am going to work with students one-on-one to model and practice writing and studying techniques. By the time we finish, students feel more confident in their own skills moving forward.
Schedule Your First Session NowParents are an essential part of their child's learning. Collaboration between student, teacher, and parent is even more important because it can make the difference between success or struggle. By choosing to tutor with me, I want to help ease the worries of both parent and student.
We will work with the student's materials and make sure that we are meeting the objectives and curriculum that the instructor has set forth, just with more individual attention for your child to help learning. In addition, my background as a high school teacher and university professor helps me guide students through the behind the scenes strategies teachers are trying to share inside the classroom.
Correspondence between parent and tutor is a must. I want to be there to answer all of your questions and make you feel at ease that your child is in the best hands possible. As such, after signing up for an initial session, you will receive access to my email and have direct contact with me. Every session will come with an overview that describes what we have covered that day, what still needs work, what we will work on next, and any improvements I am seeing. Parents are in the loop every step of the way, as they should be.

You will gain access to a Google Drive folder only you and I are able to use, where we will hold all assignment and session details in one convenient location.
All of this work outside of the session is included in the rate; however, you are only charged for the active time spent working on a document with a student (either on Zoom or in a document).

"If you are looking for a tutor, you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t give Julie an opportunity to connect with you. From the very start, you will see Julie’s high level of organization, planning, and flexibility which equates to her being able to create a plan that is on track for your student to learn at a challenging and yet not overwhelming pace. She’s excellent at building rapport with students and obviously has a love for seeing a students grow and succeed. If you are looking for the cheapest tutor then understand this isn’t Julie because she’s an expert and can command a higher price, however, if you are looking for the best value for your money, Julie is absolutely that tutor. Thank you for all you’ve done to open my students eyes and make him a much more confident and educated young adult!"
Reviews range from parents to students themselves that have commented on the service they have experienced.
"I cant believe the difference in my daughter's attitude and confidence already. This Momma’s heart is overflowing with gratitude. My daughter is chatty, but the rapport building is important, especially for her. If she connects with a teacher she can do great things! I am so grateful this is working out. She proceeded to work on her life skills class and she needed to make a Vision Board (she didn't know what that was and was doubting her ability to do it). Well she did a great job and even included improving her writing skills for her “academic” goal (There were six categories). I was shocked but it shows the impact your time together is having already! Thank you! "

Schedule NowGreat question! There are many parts to tutoring that happen behind the scenes. After you set up your initial appointment, you will fill out a Google Form that gives me specific information about your tutoring needs. From here, I will compile all resources I think we might need and prepare a lesson plan for our first session.
Then, once we have your goals, all future sessions will have a lesson plan, resources, email access to me outside of session for questions or clarification on assignments, flexible scheduling capabilities, reminder emails and text messages (if you sign up for these), progress reports, and of course the actual Zoom call itself. The hourly rate is based on the active time that we are working on an assignment (usually this is in Zoom). Everything else, is already incorporated into that price. As such, I do not charge for the hours of planning that happen outside of the session itself.
If you would like more information, add your email here and I will send an informational packet that includes more details about everything you might want to know about tutoring with me.
As an educator that is certified to teach online and lots of experience doing so, I like to expand my reach and tutor exclusively online.
When you schedule a session, you will be emailed a personal Zoom link that we will use to meet. The Calendly platform is nice enough to auto-adjust time zones, so we will always be sure we are meeting at the right time.
I suggest bringing any work you have to work on as well as any contextual information that may be helpful for me (i.e. syllabi, prompts, assignment details, due dates, etc.). Come ready to actively participate to get the most out of our session.
You may also want to make sure that your internet, speakers, microphone, camera are working before our appointment time. If possible, use a desktop with a webcam/headset instead of a phone. Having a larger screen allows for us to screenshare and see things more clearly.
Unfortunately, there are no refunds for services rendered. Since this is a service and not a product, I have already created lesson plans and met with the student, which warrants full payment.
In order to avoid cancellation fees, cancel your appointment through your Calendly confirmation email, before 24 hours of your scheduled appointment time.
A cancellation within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment will be liable to a cancellation fee. Half of the set amount will be charged at that time.
Late cancellations that are closer to scheduled start time and no shows will be charged the full amount for the missed appointment.
Reschedules within 24 hours, for later that week, will require a $20 flat fee (for the first reschedule and charged in full for a second reschedule).
Note: there is a nonrefundable deposit required for the first session (half the rate). Even if cancelled outside of 24 hours, this amount will not be refunded. You can email me directly to reschedule outside of that 24 hours though.
Who doesn't love a good discount! There are multiple price points for different services. I also offer a generalized new student discount (https://www.jewelsofteaching.com/new-student-discount-offer) and a 5% discount when you pre-purchase a multi-session package. For instance, buying 10, 1-hour sessions at the beginning of the semester and scheduling those hours whenever you see fit.
